Chanukah

Congregational Chanukah Celebration 2023
Sunday, December 10
5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m.

Members, join us for our Temple Beth Shalom Chanukah Celebration on Sunday, December 10! We'll have latkes, sufganiyot, and other things to nosh on, a Brotherhood bar, and activities including cookie decorating, an adults-only dreidel tournament, friendship bracelet making with Greene Family Camp, DIY dreidels, and more! We will end the evening with a song and Chanukiah lighting. You are invited to wear your most festive Chanukah attire.

In line with our temple values, the spirit of gifting, and the theme of lighting up others' lives, there is also a tikkun olam component to our celebration. Our Religious School students and families will be putting together care packages during our Mitzvahpalooza in January, and we invite you to sign up to donate items that are needed for these packages. We also encourage you to contribute through Shalom Austin's Dell Match for Israel.

Contribute to our celebration by making or bringing pre-made latkes! If you would like to host or cook with a group, sign up through the Sisterhood form. If you would like to contribute latkes as an individual, please sign up using this form.

About Chanukah

Chanukah (alternately spelled Hanukkah), meaning "dedication" in Hebrew, refers to the joyous eight-day celebration during which Jews commemorate the victory of the Maccabees over the armies of Syria in 165 B.C.E. and the subsequent liberation and "rededication" of the Temple in Jerusalem. The modern home celebration of Chanukah centers around the lighting of the chanukiyah, a special menorah for Chanukah; foods prepared in oil including latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly donuts); and special songs and games.
